Non-Invasive Treatment of Skin Cancer

Mohs surgery has long provided the traditional path to effective treatment for skin cancer. Yet for many patients, surgery may not be most desirable due to medical contraindications, their active lifestyle, and/or potential cosmetic concerns. For those patients, there is now a convenient, non-invasive option: electron therapy for skin cancer from IntraOp®.

Due to the high costs and complexity of full-scale, megavoltage linear accelerators (LINACs), patient accessibility to electron-beam therapy was limited, at best. Until now. As the proven pioneer in electron (particle) therapy, IntraOp overcame this barrier by leveraging its proprietary x-band technology. This innovative approach minimizes the cost of particle therapy with electrons, reduces the device footprint, and augments the dermatologist’s existing practice workflow. In other words, it’s designed specifically for the dermatology clinic. With this, IntraOp unlocks the promise of non-invasive electron therapy for skin cancer. And we bring it closer to home. So patients can enjoy the many benefits of this precise non-surgical treatment in the convenience of their local clinic.

Leveraging the Precision of Particles.

As a complement to traditional surgery—and specifically Mohs surgery—electron therapy has been administered by large hospitals and academic cancer centers for decades as the preferred non-surgical alternative for treating non-melanoma skin cancer.

IntraOp’s innovative electron-beam technology provides sub-millimeter accuracy in delivering the most precise doses of electron particles. Generally prescribed to treat the tumor bed only a few millimeters below the surface of the skin, this precise, non-surgical solution delivers significantly less dose to the healthy tissues and organs that may exist below the tumor bed as compared with x-ray or orthovoltage radiation.

This is IntraOp designed for skin cancer. And it represents the new standard of care from the proven electron cancer care company with decades of clinical data and many thousands of patients successfully treated worldwide.

Electron particles treat cancerous tissue with greater uniformity and lower exit doses — sparing healthy, underlying tissue and bone.

Precise Non-Invasive Treatment of Skin Cancer.
In Your Clinic.

So how do we do it? In a word, electrons. They are the game-changing particle solution that is simple, precise, and efficient.

Our innovative design is compact and its integrated shielding minimizes the footprint required to implement this unique solution in any clinic. And our built-in treatment planning and scheduling software utilizes the best practices in high-volume radiation oncology, patient set-up, preparation, and simulation. This contributes to a more streamlined training protocol for therapists and vastly quicker patient throughput for the clinic — all while further ensuring a safer and more effective treatment alternative for the patient.

Because IntraOp is the ideal complement to Mohs surgery, it won’t replace or disrupt your existing clinical ecosystem. In fact, it enhances it. Robotic movement enables six degrees of freedom for providing greater flexibility in patient setup and the unparalleled precision and controlled depths of a full-featured LINAC. Yet IntraOp delivers it all with a more compact footprint and a significantly smaller total cost of ownership.

For outpatient dermatology practices poised to embrace the many benefits of electrons in treating non-melanoma skin cancer, the return on investment is irrefutable.

Why Are Electrons Perfect For Skin?

Because electrons are charged particles, they deposit their energy at precise, well-defined depths into the skin. The dose is confined to a volume that conforms to the depth of the cancer.

Conversely, superficial x-rays and photons have no charge and therefore, the dose extends beyond the actual depth needed to treat the cancer, unnecessarily irradiating healthy tissue underneath. Furthermore, high-energy electrons deliver more uniform doses to the entire tumor bed and with electrons, bone and cartilage absorb much lower levels of radiation, thereby reducing the likelihood of necrosis.

It’s simple. Because of these therapeutic advantages, and others, electron-beam therapy is the superior choice for treating NMSC, offering greater value to the practicing dermatologist and their patients.

Electron therapy enables patients to keep living their active lives with little to no recovery time.

The IntraOp solution was ideal for our dermatology practice. For our non-surgical patients, we were looking for a way to treat skin cancer with electron therapy outside of an intimidating basement bunker radiation oncology department. The IntraOp system offers superior dose management with the promise of excellent tumor control and cosmesis. We are excited to be expanding our practice to off er multidisciplinary care along with radiation oncology to provide our non-surgical patients an excellent option that fits their active lifestyles.”

Modern Treatment for Active Lifestyles.

Electron therapy is a convenient treatment for patients, requiring as few as 8 to 15 minutes at their local dermatology clinic. As a non-invasive solution, it produces no cutting or scars and patients may remain on prescribed blood thinners or other medications. It’s particularly well-suited for treating cosmetically sensitive areas such as the ears, nose, lips, or around the eyes. It’s also a perfect option for treating the lower extremities where blood flow can sometimes be an issue for some patients. There is no pain or discomfort. The beauty of this treatment protocol is its effectiveness — 90–98% cure rate. There really are no limitations or restrictions as to who can be treated and electron therapy is covered by Medicare and most insurance providers.

How IntraOp May Enhance Your Practice

MULTIDISCIPLINARY CARE

Electron therapy with IntraOp brings together a range of disciplines within the clinic to better serve the varying needs of a diversified and growing patient base.

GREATER PRECISION

Electron therapy delivers targeted radiation to the entire tumor bed with more controlled doses to protect underlying healthy tissues and organs.

NON-INVASIVE TREATMENT

For patients, access to NMSC treatment without cutting or scarring is particularly favorable given the regularity of visible lesions on the head and neck.

WORKFLOW INTERGRATION

IntraOp integrates treatment planning software with DICOM compatibility — streamlining patient simulation, approval, delivery and scheduling for clinic staff.

ROBOTIC MOVEMENT

The range of motion offered by six degrees of freedom ensures greater access and control, delivering a more efficient workflow and enhanced patient comfort.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT

Cost-effective and efficient, IntraOp brings electron therapy into the dermatology clinic with well-established reimbursement policies from most insurance providers.

Robotic Movement. Optimum Workflow.

The considerable range of motion realized by IntraOp’s robotic movement equates to greater treatment flexibility and more precise clinical set-up in targeting involved tissue.

The six degrees of freedom provided through variable lateral, longitudinal, rotational and tilt motion ensures an expansive range from every treatment angle — increasing efficiencies within the clinic workflow. Less time devoted to set-up and during treatment translates to the prospect of treating more patients throughout the course of the day.
