For decades, electron IORT has been used for locally advanced and recurrent cancers, achieving excellent clinical results in both local control and survival, especially in indications where it is often difficult to obtain clear surgical margins such as pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancers, head and neck cancers, GYN cancers, and sarcomas. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN)http://www.nccn.org has recommended IORT with electrons as the treatment of choice for locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer.

IORT – Smaller, mobile delivery systems and new clinical evidence are driving this innovative form of radiation therapy, which can significantly reduce the associated burdens of treatment for patients.

In patients with locally recurrent extremity soft tissue sarcoma, limb-salvage therapy with intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) can deliver focal therapy and achieve local control for patients who otherwise may need more radical surgical procedures, according to a study by investigators at the University of California, San Francisco.
